The new technical consultant for Bangladesh Twenty20 Internationals, Sridharan Shriram arrived in Dhaka on Sunday to conduct a three-day long intensive camp, said a Bangladesh Cricket Board official.
National team players and some selected cricketers from the BCB HP team and Bangladesh Tigers program will be included in this training camp, which will take place Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium.
Shahriar Nafees, deputy manager of the BCB told the media that Sriram will exclusively watch over nearly thirty cricketers to find suitable candidates,
“Sriram will come to Dhaka on Sunday. From the very next day, he will conduct a three-day long intensive camp where he will observe the cricketers closely”, said the former opener.
Though Sriram is scheduled to arrive on Sunday, the remaining members of the coaching staff like the batting coach Jamie Siddons, pace bowling coach Alan Donald, and spin bowling coach Rangana Herath will come to Bangladesh later, said Nafees.
“Actually, Sriram wanted to see the players and work with them exclusively. That’s why he will run the special camp solely, the other members of the coaching staff will come to Bangladesh later”, he added.
The cricketers who were part of the Asia Cup team and those who were part of the team previously are working hard in the nets of BCB Academy ground and indoors before the camp under the technical consultant.
Yasir Rabbi and Soumya Sarkar batted at the nets of academy ground for hours in the morning where a bunch of net-bowlers led by Ebadot Hossain bowled at them.
Nurul Hasan also started batting practice after he had surgery due to a finger injury. They are the three probable inclusions in the World Cup-bound team.
Mahmudullah, despite losing the captaincy and putting out dismal performances is still under the consideration for the New Zealand tour and the World Cup, he also came to Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium for practice. Nazmul Hossain Shanto, who was part of the team on the Zimbabwe tour but lost his place due to poor form also trained at Mirpur.
Two new concrete wickets have been laid at the eastern end of the BCB academy ground where Sriram is likely to test the skill of cricketers.
Considering the pace and bounce of the Australian wickets, Sriram prescribed the BCB cricket operations department to lay concrete wickets and two such wickets are prepared.
Sriram will also have to solve the complex puzzle of selecting the opening pair for Bangladesh in T20 where continuous chopping and changing were made.
In the first match of the last Asia Cup, Mohammad Naim and Anamul Haque were sent to start the innings but they failed to put on a good show. In the second match, make-shift openers Mehidy Hasan and Sabbir Rahman were sent on top and both gave Bangladesh a decent start.
As Liton is back in the team, he is supposed to get back his opening position but chief selector Minhazul Abedin told the media that they have other plans.
“We are planning to play him at four though a final decision is yet to be taken in this regard”, Minhazul told the media on Saturday.
Soumya, who last played a T20I match during the previous edition of the T20 World Cup in UAE and got axed from the team due to his poor show is being considered as an opener as well.
Despite not doing anything remarkable for his premier league side Mohammedan or with the A team in the Caribbeans, the left-handed opener is in contention of getting a seat in the World Cup-bound flight for his past performances in Australia during the 2015 World Cup.
Pacers who missed the Asia Cup like Shoriful Islam and Hasan Mahmud are also expected to be in the trials where uncapped pacer Mrittunjoy Chowdhury could be a surprise package.
