Almost 30 cricketers took part on the first day of a three-day special training camp under Sridharan Sriram, the new technical director for the Bangladesh cricket team in the Twenty20 format.
The camp began at 10 am on Monday at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium, where selected cricketers from the BCB High-Performance squad and the Bangladesh Tigers program were called in beside the national team cricketers.
Though drizzle interrupted the training a few times, the BCB director and also the team director of the national team, Khaled Mahmud, said they tried a couple of new things under Sriram.
“We gave challenges to both bowlers and batsmen. We wanted to see how the batsmen play in the first six overs and how the bowlers bowl in that time. It takes nearly 30 minutes to complete six overs, but it took us around 45 minutes because the coach (technical director) talked to the bowler and gave him the message. We were there to see whether they can execute our plans or not,” said Mahmud.
“Today, we gave them a target. In the first six overs, we wanted 50 runs from batsmen. They can lose two wickets maximum. For bowlers, we gave them a target of restricting the batsmen under 45 runs,” he added.
The batsmen batted in pairs on Monday. Initially, it was Mehidy Hasan and Sabbir Rahman. Then, Liton Das paired up with Najmul Hossain Shanto. After the rain, Shanto was taken off and Afif Hossain joined Liton. Later on, Mahmudullah batted along with Yasir Rabbi. Then the veteran was replaced by Mosaddek Hossain.
The pace bowlers bowled throughout the day from two ends. Ebadot Hossain, Shoriful Islam, and Mustafizur Rahman were among the prominent pacers, while youngsters like Ripon Mondol and Tanzim Hasan Sakib were also there.
Mahmud told the media that on day two, they will try out different things, “Main bowlers will rest tomorrow (today). Maybe bowlers from the HP team will bowl maximum overs. Those who did not open today, (Mohammad) Naim and Emon (Parvez Hossain), will bat tomorrow (today).”
Sriram was present on the field and observed closely from behind the umpire at the ground. He was giving instructions to the bowlers and watching the batsmen.
Mahmud feels that nothing will change drastically, but it will help the players to minimise errors during games.
“I think we hardly worked on such scenario-based practice earlier. It will help the players to think more about what to do in real situations. It will not change in a day or two, but what we want is to maintain the process so that they can understand what to doz because a captain or coach can’t tell everyone what is to be done every time,” said the former captain.
