After consecutive golden ducks in his first two matches in the Caribbean Premier League, Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan came back with a bang for the Guyana Amazon Warriors as he took home back-to-back player of the match awards, with the latest being on Monday against table-toppers Barbados Royals at the Providence Stadium.
Shakib starred with an all-around display as Guyana cruised to a five-wicket win to stage a playoff contest against Barbados today in the first qualifier.
After being put into bat, Barbados were bundled out for 125. Jason Holder top-scored with 42 runs off 39 balls, including one four and three sixes as he put together a 51-run stand with Azam Khan.
In the 2.3 overs Shakib bowled, he conceded 12 runs and took the wicket of Mujeeb Ur Rahman, while pacer Romario Shepherd picked up three wickets for 14 runs.
In reply, Shakib, who came to the crease in the fourth over, smashed his first fifty of the season as he scored 53 off 30 balls, hitting five fours and three sixes in the process. The left-hander strung up a 79-run stand with Rahmanullah Gurbaz to set up a comfortable chase. Shakib predominantly favoured the offside as he smashed some hefty blows through point and extra-cover.
The ace all-rounder couldn’t quite see it through as he was caught out at deep mid-wicket trying to pick up a full-length delivery by Obed McCoy as Guyana still needed 29 runs to win.
Skipper Shimron Hetmyer (10) and Keemo Paul (12) took Guyana home, with the latter remaining unbeaten as he hit the winning runs.
