India national women’s cricket team cruised to a thumping 104-run victory against the UAE making it three wins in the ongoing Women’s Asia Cup 2022 at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium Academy Ground two on Tuesday.
Indian batters Deepti Sharma and Jemimah Rodrigues scored 64 and 75 runs respectively to set up a stiff total of 178-5 for a feeble UAE, who could only manage 74-4 in reply.
Batter Jemimah took home her second player of the match award after she produced a standout display of 75 runs off 53 deliveries in their opener against Sri Lanka.
India won the toss and opted to bat first. But they were jittered to a shaky start as they lost both their openers within the first four overs. In the next over, they lost number three Dayalan Hemalatha, resulting in a dismal powerplay score of 27-3.
Despite the subdued start, the Indian batters made a remarkable turnaround as Deepti and Jemimah put together a 128-run stand from just 81 deliveries. Deepti’s 64 included five fours and two sixes before failing to put away a full toss, while Jemimah smashed 11 fours as she remained unbeaten, taking India to 178-5.
In reply, UAE lost three early wickets in the first two overs.
India’s left-arm orthodox Rajeshwari Gayakwad struck twice to remove Esh Oza and Natasha Cherriath, while opener Theertha Sathish went back to the hut courtesy of a run-out by Sneh Rana.
It looked bleak for UAE but they too enacted a resurgence of their own as Kavisha Egodage (30*) and Khushi Sharma (29) stitched up a 58-run partnership off 94 balls to reach their target of playing out the full 20 overs. Kavisha remained unbeaten while Khushi was dismissed by off-spinner Dayalath Hemalatha.
In the other match of the day, Sri Lanka brushed aside Thailand beating them by 49 runs in their second match at the same venue.
Batting first, Sri Lankan openers put up a 63-run stand before skipper Chamari Athapathu got dismissed for 12 runs. But her opening partner, Harshitha Samarawickrama, went on her merry way, scoring 81 runs off 69 balls as he hit 10 fours. The right-handed batter was castled by off-spinner Nattaya Boochatham but late fireworks from Nilakshi De Silva, who hit three fours and two sixes to score 39 off 21, drove Sri Lanka to 156-5.
In reply, Thailand managed 107-5 giving the Lankans their second win. Thailand’s Chanida Suttirang top-scored with 37 off 42 balls.
