Heroic Zakir saves Bangladesh A

A valiant attempt from Bangladesh A opening batter Zakir Hasan, who batted over 10 hours in the second innings of their first four-day match against India A in Cox’s Bazar, allowed them to salvage a draw on the final day on Friday.

Bangladesh A also received some favour from lady luck as they had only one wicket in hand when the match concluded due to bad light despite having a couple of overs left to play.

Bangladesh A were trodden on by India A following the first innings of both sides as the hosts were bowled out for 112 before the visitors declared on 465-5.

An innings defeat was looming on Bangladesh A, but Zakir, who ended up scoring 173 off 402 balls, ensured that his team provided a proper fight.

The left-handed batter stayed at the crease for 623 minutes, hitting 16 fours and three sixes, and was dismissed as the eighth batter to go back with only six overs to play on the day.

He was aptly aided by Najmul Hossain Shanto, who scored 77 off 187 balls, but no other batter could bat for long as the whole middle order failed to have an impact.

After Zakir’s fall, Bangladesh A lost Nayeem Hasan too, meaning they had to play out 26 more balls before securing a draw with just a wicket in hand.

Rejaur Rahman Raja and Khaled Ahmed saw off the next 14 balls, which proved to be enough as bad light did not allow the last two overs to be played and Bangladesh A earned a draw from a losing position.

The next match of the two-match series will start in Sylhet on December 6.
