No Tamim as Zakir earns maiden Test call-up

Opening batter Zakir Hasan, who played a phenomenal knock of 173 runs for Bangladesh A to secure a draw against India A, has earned a call-up to the Bangladesh Test side following Tamim Iqbal’s exclusion due to a groin injury.

Tamim, who missed the One-Day International series, which Bangladesh have already put in their pockets, will also be out of the first Test in Chattogram starting on December 14.

Zakir also had a brilliant outing in the 24th National Cricket League, ending the edition as the highest run-scorer with 442 runs in eight innings for Sylhet.

Although this is his first Test team call-up, the left-handed batter has already played for the Tigers as he played a Twenty20 International against Sri Lanka in 2018.

On the brighter side for Bangladesh, Taskin Ahmed is back in the squad after he missed the ODI series due to back pain. Another one back to the Test side is Mushfiqur Rahim, who was on leave during Bangladesh’s last Test series against West Indies.

Three players have been excluded from the squad of that series- Mosaddek Hossain, Mustafizur Rahman, and Shohidul Islam. The Fizz was always unlikely for the Tests at home, but Mosaddek’s exclusion comes after he did not get to play a match in the Caribbeans. The other one, Shohidul, is currently banned for breaching anti-doping regulations.
