Bangladesh women’s national cricket team were thrashed by eight wickets in the first One-Day International of their three-match series against New Zealand in Wellington on Sunday.

Batting first, Bangladesh mustered 180-8 on board, courtesy of a brilliant 73 from skipper Nigar Sultana Joty.

In reply, the hosts never looked in any sort of bother as they chased the total down with eight wickets and 19 overs in hand, with Suzie Bates and Maddy Green picking up fifties. Bates was adjudged player of the match for her unbeaten knock of 93.

Bangladesh, after losing the Twenty20 Internationals series 3-0, opted to bat first in the first ODI. The morning showed the day as they lost Murshida Khatun (1) and Fargana Haque (1) within the sixth over, but from there skipper Nigar put up a 64-run stand with opener Sharmin Akhter.

After Sharmin’s (29) departure, Nigar’s partnership with Lata Mandal (22) of 55 runs was showing Bangladesh hope, but the latter’s departure saw Nigar fighting a lone battle that ended on the final ball of the 47th over as she ended on 73 off 133 balls, hitting four fours and a six.

A late cameo of 15 runs off nine balls from Ritu Moni took Bangladesh to 180-8.

In reply, Bangladesh lost the plot early as Bates and skipper Sophie Devine combined for 50 runs in just 8.3 overs for the opening wicket.

Bangladesh had a glimmer of hope when Jahanara Alam sent Devine (21) and Amelia Kerr (0) in consecutive deliveries, but that soon dissipated as Bates turned on the screws.

She and Green put together an unbeaten partnership of 131 runs to ensure their lead in the series came in an emphatic manner.

Bates, unbeaten on 93 off 91 balls, smashed 12 fours, with Green ending unbeaten on 59, hitting five.

The second ODI of the series will be in Napier on Wednesday.
