Bangladesh were left distraught after the second day of the ongoing first Test of their two-match series against India at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chattogram as a shambolic batting performance saw them reduced to 133-8 by the end of the day’s play after India posted 404 in their first innings on Thursday.
On the second day, the Tigers were turmoiled by Ravichandran Ashwin and Kuldeep Yadav with the bat, before Mohammad Siraj with the red cherry, and then again by Yadav with the ball.
Bangladesh batters got starts as three of them – Zakir Hasan, Liton Das, and Mushfiqur Rahim – got into their 20s, but could never go beyond as they crumbled. Mehidy Hasan Miraz (16*) and Ebadot Hossain (13*) were at the crease by the end of the second day.
Yadav picked up four wickets with his chinaman, while Siraj picked up three. The other went to Umesh Yadav.
Earlier, Bangladesh had a great start to the day as Ebadot finally managed to send Shreyas Iyer (86) back early after missing a dolly and watching the bails defying physics on the first day.
Bangladesh hoped to bowl India out soon from there, but a 92-run partnership between Ashwin and Yadav ensured that India neared 400 as the former picked up his fifty, while the former became Taijul Islam’s fourth scalp of the innings on 40.
After India were bowled out, Bangladesh were in trouble as soon as they came out to bat as Najmul Hossain Shanto dangled outside the off stump to gift his wicket to Siraj in the very first ball of the innings.
Soon, Yasir Ali Chowdhury, promoted to number three, followed suit as he tried to pull Umesh to the boundary, but only managed to achieve the distance to his stumps to get out on four.
Coming in at four, Liton displayed some fine stroke-making as he hit Umesh for three consecutive boundaries before tea. But after the break and a verbal spat with Siraj, a delivery that stayed low undid the Bangladesh batter as he inside-edged it onto his stumps. Soon after that, debutant Zakir poked at a Siraj delivery to hand him his third.
Skipper Shakib Al Hasan managed to play 25 balls, but only managed three, before becoming Yadav’s first wicket of the day.
The left-handed wrist-spinner then also dismissed Nurul Hasan Sohan, Mushfiq, and Taijul to make it four for the day.
A 31-run unbeaten stand between Miraz and Ebadot took Bangladesh to 133-8 at the end of day two.
