And scene…Leo claims the throne

It was drama at its peak. You could ask the greatest writer in the whole world to script this, and they would have fallen short.

Argentina were in complete domination. Absolute domination. It looked like they had a stroll in the park, and a magical Angel Di Maria performance saw them lead 2-0, among which one was scored by Lionel Messi scored from the spot.

But then, chaos erupted. Nicolas Otamendi conceded a penalty and France suddenly had a way back. Kylian Mbappe scored, and 97 seconds later, he did it again, and suddenly, the French had crawled their way back into the game.

The game went into extra time, and three minutes into the second half of that, Messi suddenly sprinted as if 10 years were taken from him, and Argentina led again.

But only if that lasted. Gonzalo Montiel used his hand to block a shot from Mbappe, and the resulting penalty saw the PSG star score the first World Cup final hat-trick since Geoff Hurst in 1966.

But that was not enough. Kingsley Coman and Aurelien Tchouameni missed, and Argentina stayed perfect. And Montiel then made sure he paid back for his sin during the match as he scored the winning penalty to bring the third star to the Argentina shirt.

After all that chaos, one thing now has been written in gold. Messi, who had been constantly criticised for his constant catastrophes wearing the Argentina shirt, just scored twice in a World Cup final, then scored in the tiebreaker, and led his team to their first-ever World Cup in 36 years.

In every Messi vs Diego Maradona comparison, the question poked at the former was where his World Cup was. Well, here it is.

Messi, after more than a thousand games in those legs, especially his left, has now achieved the holy grail of football.

And that too being the most influential player in the team. But history will not forget the others. Especially Di Maria.

The winger could not start the matches of the last eight or the semis, but he got his chance Sunday. And then, he put on a show as he won a penalty and scored the other. All that, in his last game for Argentina.

Talking about Lionels, Lionel Scaloni deserves the praise for forming a unit, and then showing his tactical aptitude to ensure that the Albiceleste found a way to gold.

But after everything, the talks will follow the path of Messi. The mercurial, the mesmerical, the atrocious, the marvellous Argentina, who now has every trophy he could ever win.

And that puts him on the throne. Above else. Above everybody.
