Russell Domingo resigned from his post as the head coach of the Bangladesh Test and One-Day International teams, ending his time in Bangladesh after a little bit more than three years.
Domingo submitted his resignation on Tuesday night after he returned to his homeland South Africa following Bangladesh’s 2-0 series defeat to India on Sunday.
“He (Domingo) has resigned. He sent a letter to our CEO last night (Tuesday) about his immediate resignation. He did not state any reason. He wished the team the best for the future,” BCB Cricket Operations Chairman Jalal Yunus told the media on Wednesday.
Domingo joined as the Bangladesh head coach in August 2019 after Steve Rhodes was sacked earlier following the team’s dire display in the 2019 World Cup.
Domingo’s time started with a Test defeat to Afghanistan, followed by a tri-nation Twenty20 International series at home, in which Bangladesh reached the final that was abandoned due to rain.
Under his leadership, Bangladesh moved from their all-spin attack at home and a pace attack started to take shape as Domingo continuously insisted on playing pacers at home, something that paid dividends in the early days of 2022 when the Tigers claimed a historic Test win in New Zealand by beating the hosts by eight wickets in Mount Maunganui.
Domingo oversaw two big successes in ODI in 2022 as Bangladesh won their first-ever series against the Proteas in South Africa, before beating India at home 2-1, which later turned into Domingo’s last series as Bangladesh head coach.
Domingo was relieved of his duties as the head coach of the Twenty20 Internationals team earlier this year before the Asia Cup as Sridharan Sriram took charge.
Seems like BCB is looking to follow that path. “There will be two coaches. One for T20Is, one for Test and ODIs,” Yunus said on Wednesday.
The Tigers’ next series is in March when England will come to Bangladesh to play three ODIs and three T20Is.
The BCB Cricket Operations Chairman insisted that the new head coach will arrive by then.
“Somebody who we are discussing with will join the team ahead of the England series. We do not want to state names before everything is done. Once it is final, we will disclose the names,” he told the media.
