Barishal rampant, Chattogram struggle

Fortune Barishal had a brilliant run in the Chattogram phase of the ongoing ninth Bangladesh Premier League as they won all four of their matches in this period while hosts Chattogram Challengers struggled as they lost three out of their four matches in this part.

Barishal, who came into Chattogram with one win out of two matches, went on a marauding run as they won all of their games at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium.

Skipper Shakib Al Hasan continued to star with the bat as he now has 275 runs in five innings, the most in the tournament, while his teammate Pakistani recruit Iftikhar

Ahmed sits third with 256 runs.

They beat Chattogram Challengers by 26 runs in their first match in Chattogram before edging past Comilla Victorians by 12 runs. That was followed by a 67-run thrashing of Rangpur Riders before a 13-run win over Dhaka Dominators to finish the phase on a high.

Chattogram, on the other hand, managed an eight-wicket win over Dhaka after being beaten by Barishal. But that was that as they lost consecutive matches against Comilla and Khulna Tigers.

Khulna, who came to Chattogram without a win, managed to find their first two in their three matches there. They lost to Rangpur but bounced back in the reverse fixture to find their first win before beating Chattogram.

Defending Champions Comilla, who had been struggling in Dhaka with two defeats in two matches, climbed up to the third in the table as they found three wins in their four matches.

They lost to Barishal but then beat Chattogram convincingly before inflicting Sylhet Strikers’ first defeat. They rounded up the phase by beating Dhaka Dominators by 33 runs.

Sylhet came to Chattogram at the top of the table with four wins in four matches. They had only two matches in the port city – the first they won against Dhaka before suffering their first defeat to Comilla.

After the Chattogram phase, Sylhet are still on top of the table but only just as both they and Barishal currently have 10 points, with the former ahead on net run rate. They are followed by Comilla at third while Dhaka languish at the bottom with only two points in six matches.

In the personal charts, Shakib leads the scoring followed by this edition’s surprise – Dhaka skipper Nasir Hossain. The all-rounder has been performing with both bat and ball, scoring 269 runs and picking up seven wickets, which put him in fourth of the wicket-taking list. Sylhet’s Towhid Hridoy, who could only play three innings due to an injury, sits fifth with 195 runs.

In the bowling charts, Khulna’s Wahab Riaz leads with 11 wickets, followed by Sylhet skipper Mashrafe Mortaza with nine.
