Bangladesh batter Zakir Hasan has been ruled out of the upcoming three-match One-Day International against Ireland, starting on Saturday.

The left-handed batter, who was called up to the ODI side for the first time in his career, injured his left thumb in training.

He has been replaced by Rony Talukdar, who scored a fifty in the Dhaka Premier League on Thursday.

The incident happened when Zakir was facing fast bowlers and one of the balls hit him in his left thumb. An X-ray was done on that finger, and the report saw the batter ruled out.

“The 25-year-old left-hander suffered a thumb injury in training at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium today,” Bangladesh Cricket Board said in a press release.

“Zakir injured his left thumb while batting in the nets today. An X-ray has shown a minor undisplaced fracture which could take around two weeks to recover from. Unfortunately, this means he will not be available for the ODI series,” Bangladesh national team physio Bayjedul Islam Khan said.

Zakir had played a Twenty20 International for Bangladesh in 2018, and made his Test debut against India in late 2022, where he hit a maiden international ton.

‘Challenge to get results here’

Ireland batter Harry Tector, who will play his first international match in Bangladesh come Saturday, said that it will be very difficult for them to find results against Bangladesh in the upcoming ODI series.

“I think Bangladesh have played some really, really good cricket. They have beaten a lot of top sides and particularly at home, their home form is really, really impressive. So, it’s certainly going to be a challenge for us to get results out here. But if we play well and play how we can certainly get good results,” the Irish batter said in a press conference on Thursday.

Tector has experience playing in Bangladesh several times at age-level and for the A side, while Andrew Balbirnie and Curtis Campher played in the latest edition of the Bangladesh Premier League.

The explosive batter was hoping that those encounters will help the whole team throughout the tour.

“I think a lot of us have been here before and played here before. So, there’s a lot of experience in the group. It’s more about just trying to pick the brains of the guys who were recently here in the BPL. They’ve faced the Bangladeshi bowlers most recently. So, trying to get a bit of insight from them more so about the conditions,” he said.
