Defending Champions Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club beat City Club by 5 runs in a last over thriller in their Dhaka Premier League match at the Khan Shaheb Osman Ali Stadium in Narayanganj on Tuesday.
City Club needed 12 runs in the final over with four wickets in hand but could only manage six runs in the over despite a boundary.
City Club’s Asif Ahmed Ratul and skipper Robiul Hoque were on the pitch to face Mrittunjoy Chowdhury in the final over. Ratul sent the first ball to the long-off for a single and Robiul hit the second to the third man for a four.
Mrittunjoy came back in the third ball with a dot and in the fourth, Robiul missed the ball and was run out while trying to steal a single. In the fifth ball, Asif hit the ball to mid-wicket but refused a single, leading to non-striker batter Naimur Rahman Noyon getting run out.
Needing seven off the final ball, Asif tried to hit a six over the long-off but he couldn’t time the hit and managed only a single.
Before that, Sheikh Jamal DC put 228 runs on the board batting first, courtesy of Saif Hasan’s 56 and Shykat Ali’s 52. But the match was interrupted by rain in the second innings and the match was shortened to 32 overs, thus the target was set to 168. City Club ended their innings on 162-8.
