Bangladesh lose the second match of the SAFF U - 17 Women's Championship 2023 3-0 against Russia after they had started their tournament thrashing Bhutan 8-1 at the Bir Shrestha Shaheed Shipahi Mostafa Kamal Stadium in Kamalapur on Wednesday.

Bangladesh players were outplayed physically as Russia took the lead early in the game. In the fifth minute of the game, Russian skipper Elena Golik brought them the first goal.

Elena was given too much space as she received a pass from the midfield and timed her shot into the Bangladesh goal and the defenders could nothing to stop her.

After conceding the first goal, Bangladesh players fought back and gave the Russians a hard time as they couldn’t break the host’s defense line until the 45+1 minute into the game.

Golik scored a second one just before the halt time whistle and the game was seemingly over for the hosts. Anastasia Karataeva hammered the final nail in the coffin as she scored the third goal for the Russians from a brilliant strike.

The difference of strength between the two sides were evident from the first minute of the game. Russian Women’s football team are ranked 26th in the FIFA rankings, while Bangladesh are 140th.

With the win, Russia now equalled Bangladesh and India in the points table with all of them having gained three points from one win each.

Russia is playing the tournament as a guest participant. SAFF invited Russia amidst the ban that FIFA and UEFA have called upon Russia that prevents them any official participation in any European competition because of the invasion on Ukraine.

Talks are that, Russian Football Union are looking to switch to Asian Football Confederation as their relation with UEFA have fallen cold. Russia have been trying to switch to Asia to keep their athletes engaged in the international arena and keep

them relevant.

Russia will also play Bhutan, Nepal and India in the tournament.
