Bangladesh Women’s National Cricket will be trying to gather some crucial ICC Women’s Championship points in their three-match One-Day International series in Sri Lanka as they eye a direct qualification to the 2025 Women’s ODI World Cup in India.

The Bangladesh team left for Sri Lanka on Tuesday to play three ODIs and three Twenty20 Internationals.

The ODI matches of the series are part of the ICC Women’s Championship (IWC), which is the official qualifying process for the 2025 Women’s ODI World Cup in India. The top five teams of the 10, alongside the hosts, will automatically qualify, with the other two spots being filled up through a global qualifier between six teams, four of the remaining sides of IWC and two selected from ICC ODI rankings.

This is the first time Bangladesh are participating in the IWC, and this series is the second of their eight series in the cycle, where Bangladesh all-rounder Jahanara Alam hopes to gain some points.

“If we can earn some points here, it will of course be better for us. We do not want to play the qualifiers again. We will try to gain as many points as possible,” she told the media on Tuesday.

Bangladesh currently sit eighth on two points from three matches as they lost one and the other two were abandoned in their away series against New Zealand. Sri Lanka also have two points from six matches as they have won one and lost five.

Jahanara was hopeful about getting positive results, “They will play at their home ground and prepare pitches accordingly. Maybe they will try to prepare batting-friendly tracks as far as I know. I hope it won’t be that tough. We have had good preparation at Khulna. I believe there will be fighting matches. Hopefully, we will bring back good results.”

Bangladesh will play their three ODIs at the P Sara Oval in Colombo on April 29, May 2 and 4.

The three T20Is will take place at the Singhalese Sports Club Cricket Ground on May 9, 11, and 12.
