When Mahmudullah Riyad was not included in the Bangladesh squad for their three-match One-Day International series against Ireland at home, the selectors insisted that he was in the mix, and so did Bangladesh head coach Chandika Hathu-rusinghe.
However, Mahmudullah was once again not included in Bangladesh’s three-match ODI series against Ireland in England, which is part of the ODI Super League, and Bangladesh Cricket Board director and the national side’s Team Director Khaled Mahmud said that he did not see the veteran in the squad for the World Cup later this year.
“(Mahmudullah) Riyad is a very important player for us, obviously. He was won a lot of matches for Bangladesh. But as he is not in the team, as I see it, I don’t see him in the World Cup squad. Because if he would be included there, he would have been picked for the recent series,” he told the media on Thursday.
The former Bangladesh skipper added, “The main thing is the current situation. How much the team needs him or how his replacements are performing. If they do, there is little chance for Mahmudullah. If they don’t, then there is his experience.”
The veteran batter has been enduring a sticky spell in ODIs as he has scored 481 runs in 16 innings since the start of 2022, with a strike rate of only 68.91.
Mahmud, though, refused to rule the batter altogether.
