Mohammedan Sporting Club climbed to third position in the Bangladesh Premier League football points table on Saturday as they beat Chattogram Abahani 2-1 at the Bir Shreshtha Flight Lt. Matiur Rahman Stadium in Munshiganj.

This win put them third on the points table with 19 points from 13 games, behind league leaders Bashundhara Kings (37) and Abahani Limited (27).

In the other match of the day, Fortis FC thrashed Azampur FC 4-0 to move up to seventh in the points table.

Mohammedan started the game in fifth place with 16 points and a defeat would have seen them stuck there. The first half ended goalless but a penalty in the second half saw the Black & Whites given the opportunity to take the lead, and Souleymane Diabate did.

In the 73rd minute, Diabate doubled Mohammedan’s advantage by taking his league tally to nine.

However, it was a nervy finish for them after Md Tarek pulled one back for the Chattogram outfit but Mohammedan managed to hold on and take the three points.

At the other match of the day at the Rajshahi District Stadium, Fortis put four past Azampur.

Fortis made a fast start to the match as their Afghan recruit Amiruddin Sharifi scored in the third minute but they could not add any more to their tally in the first half.

In the 71st minute, Gambian Gaira Joof doubled Fortis’s lead before his compatriot Omar Babou made it 3-0 eight minutes later from the spot.

Sakhawat Hosen put the final nail in the Azampur box as he scored in the fourth minute of stoppage time.

Fortis now have 15 points from 13 matches, while Azampur FC are languishing at the bottom with only three points.
