Bangladesh National Women’s Cricket Team suffered a 58-run defeat in the rain-affected second One-Day International of their three-match series against Sri Lanka in Colombo.
Batting first, Sri Lanka managed 186-5 in 30 overs and the visitors were bowled out for 128 in the penultimate delivery of the chase.
Bangladesh now trail 1-0 in the series after the first match was abandoned due to rain.
The second ODI was delayed by rain as by the time the game started, 20 overs were cut off and it was reduced to a 30-over match.
Sri Lankan skipper Chamari Athapaththu opted to bat first winning the toss, and she led the charge with 64 runs off 60 balls, an innings where she hit six fours and four sixes.
Harshitha Samarawickrama’s unbeaten 45 off 28 balls, alongside Kavisha Dilhari’s cameo of 25 runs from 15 balls, saw Sri Lanka post 186-5.
For Bangladesh, Jahanara Alam, Sultana Khatun, Nahida Akter, Ritu Moni, and Fahima Khatun picked up a wicket each.
In reply, Bangladesh never showed the intent necessary to chase down the sizeable total as they started slow and kept going that way.
Shamima Sultana (5) and Sobhana Mostary (11) departed within the sixth over and after using up 24 balls to score 16, Murshida Khatun was gone in the next.
Skipper Nigar Sultana Joty and Fargana Haque put together a 51-run stand for the fourth wicket but it took 88 balls, well below par the required run rate.
Nigar returned for 37 off 51 balls when she was caught brilliantly at long-on by Dilhari, while Fargana played 46 balls to score 24.
Six wickets for 29 runs then saw Bangladesh bowled out for 128.
Off-spinner Oshadi Ranasinghe was adjudged Player of the Match for her five-wicket haul.
The third and final ODI of the series will be played on Sunday, which will be followed by a three-match Twenty20 International series.
