Bangladesh Men’s National Football Team will play a friendly against Cambodia on June 15 ahead of their 2023 SAFF Championship in India, the Bangladesh Football Federation informed on Sunday.
The decision was disclosed following a meeting of the BFF National Teams committee.
“We have arranged a FIFA friendly against Cambodia on June 15. It will be played in Cambodia, from where the team will directly fly to India the next day for the SAFF Championship,” BFF vice-president and National Teams committee chairman Kazi Nabil Ahmed told the media.
The SAFF Championship, which will be held in Bengaluru, India, will start on June 21 and the Red and Greens will start training for the tournament on June 4, the day after the Bangladesh Premier League ends.
“We will start our camp on June 4 after the league ends on June 3. We will train at the facilities of Bashundhara Kings,” Nabil added.
Bangladesh are unbeaten against Cambodia in their five clashes, winning four and drawing one. However, their main goal is the SAFF Championship, a title they have not won since 2003.
In the last edition, Bangladesh failed to qualify for the semi-finals from the group stage, and although there are expectations to lift the trophy, Bangladesh head coach Javier Cabrera is rather willing to take it match-by-match.
“We need to focus on ourselves. By going game-by-game, and being competitive, we know we can achieve something important. We have to achieve that with the proper preparation we will have,” the Spaniard said on Sunday.
