After a rusty performance with the bat, Bangladesh A also failed with the ball as West Indies ended the second day of the second four-day match with a 31-run lead with four wickets in hand as they put 268-6 at stumps in Sylhet on Wednesday.
Bangladesh started the day’s play from 175-6, where they had left at the end of the first day, and the lacklustre performance continued as they were bowled out for 237, adding 62 runs on the day.
Shahadat Hossain, who was unbeaten on 28 at the end of the first day, was the only shining light for the disappointing batting effort from Bangladesh as the youngster managed to notch up a composed 73-run knock of 124 balls. While he scored his 28 off 77 balls on the first day, he sped it up on Wednesday as his next 45 runs came off just 47 balls. His innings consisted of 10 fours and two sixes.
Other than Shahadat, only skipper Afif Hossain (37) and Saif Hasan (31) managed to go past 30.
In reply, the Caribbeans stumbled early in their first innings as they lost opener Tagenarine Chanderpaul in the fifth over on four, but fought back strongly as Kirk McKenzie partnered with Raymon Reifer for a 116-run second wicket stand.
After Reifer was out on 37, McKenzie continued his innings and Steven Athanaze supported him from the other end. The Caribbean opener missed out on his century for nine runs as he was ousted by Saif on 91.
The West Indies side finished the day with 268-6 with Athanaze scoring 45 and Keacy Uydess Carty scoring 68 in the third session. Joshua Michael and Kevin Oswald Sinclaire will start the third day’s play for the Caribbeans.
At one point after the second session, West Indies were looking to go big with Athanaze and Carty, but Nayeem Hasan brought Bangladesh the breakthrough they had been looking for trapping the set batter in an LBW.
Bangladesh’s Saif took two wickets while Nayeem, Tanvir Islam, and Syed Khaled Ahmed, each took a wicket.
Bangladesh would want to bowl the Caribbeans out as early as possible on the third day, to still have a chance to fight back and take a lead in the series, which is at a stalemate after the first match between the sides ended in a draw.
