Abahani Limited Dhaka will take on their arch-rivals Mohammedan Sporting Club, who had reached the final of the tournament after 14 years in the final of Federation Cup football today at Shaheed Dhirendranath Datta Stadium in Cumilla.
The match kicks off at 3.15 pm.
Ahead of the match, both teams had practice sessions at the match venue.
Earlier, in the first semi-final, Mohammedan defeated Bashundhara Kings, the winner of the Bangladesh Premier League football 2-1 to reach the final.
Mohammedan’s Nigerian forward Chukuamaka Emmanuel and Malian forward Souleymane Diabate’s goal ensured the King’s downfall and Mohammedan’s first final of the tournament since 2009 when they eventually became the champions defeating Abahani in penalties in the final.
In the other semi-final, Abahani defeated Sheikh Russel Krira Chakra by 3-0 to reach set their clash against their arch-rivals in the final.
The sky blues will enter the match as the favorites. They are currently in the second position of the BPL, 11 points ahead of Mohammedan.
Both the teams are heavily invested in the overseas players to find the goals in the forward line. Abahani will count on their Costa Rican forward Daniel Colindres and Nigerian Emeka Chukwudiebube Ogbugh for the goals in the front, while Mohammedan has Emmanuel and Diabate.
The traditional black and whites, despite being the underdogs will fight for the title as the derby comes down to prestige. Moreover, the fact that Mohammedan came to the final by defeating the Kings, might cause worries to the sky blues. The two teams faced each other in BPL this Friday when the match ended in a draw.
