Bangladesh Cricket Board’s High-Performance Team’s camp started in Dhaka on May 24, with the team’s participation in the ACC Emerging Teams Asia Cup in mind to be held in Sri Lanka in July.
The camp is being done under the guidance of an eight-member coaching panel, headed by David Hemp, who is the former head coach of the Pakistan Women’s National Team and has a two-year contract with BCB. The coaching panel also consists of Dr David Scott, who is an expert on behaviour change and performance enhancement in sports, as the Sports Psychologist.
The camp will be held in three different places for three specialised campaigns till June 26. The first phase of the camp will continue till May 31 in Dhaka, which will hold the screening and fitness test. Then the camp will move to Rajshahi for the skill training which will continue from June 1 to 8, before going to Bogura for the finishing phase, where the camp will be from June 9 to 26.
Bangladesh national team’s spin bowling coach Rangana Herath will coach the spinners in the camp. He joined the camp at the request of the BCB head of program David Moore as there were no spin coaches available.
BCB HP squad has seven spinners in total called up in the camp, four off-spinners, two leg-spinners, and a left-arm orthodox bowler. Herath will work with them to improve their bowling.
Herath, while talking to the media on Tuesday, talked about the camp and the players.
When asked about whether the pitch in the world cup would support the spinners he said, “If the condition is tough for the spinners, it’ll be challenging. That’s why we are doing these camps ahead of the World Cup.
“We have been working with the variations and tactics, if the pitch doesn’t support, the bowlers will have to work with these. I think pitches in the world cup will not behave well for the spinners,” he added.
When asked if the team needed options in Shakib’s place in the spin attack, he said, combination
is the key.
“Team combination is the main factor here. Team selectors would set that. Our job here is to keep the spinners ready for the selectors, we’re working on that job.”
In the last series against Ireland, Bangladesh used three spinners and three pacers, on that matter Herath said, “Well, we won the match, right? That means the combination was good. I’m happy if we set our combination according to the conditions.”
About the ongoing HP squad’s camp, the Lankan said that the players in the HP camp are improving, and we’re working on it.
He said, “We have resources here, there’s Rishad and Naim Shakib. There is another, his name is Biplob. We want to bring out the best in them. Given proper treatment, they will gain both confidence and experience, which is an important thing.”
About Bangladeshi pacers doing well in recent times, he said, “Pacers doing well is a good thing, but if one unit does well and the other doesn’t, it won’t work. The combination is the main thing here.”
“If you have proper fast bowlers and spinners, you can prepare a proper bowling unit. we are working with individuals to try and make a proper bowling unit,” he added.
