Bangladesh Test captain Shakib Al Hasan joined the team in Antigua on Saturday and began his individual training on Sunday ahead of the first Test of the two-match series against West Indies starting on June 16.
Shakib was made the Test captain for the third time and after the announcement from the Bangladesh Cricket Board President Nazmul Hassan, he suddenly left Dhaka for USA, where his family members are staying.
The all-rounder reached Antigua from Madison, Wisconsin on Saturday and hit the training ground on Sunday. He carried out his batting drills against local net bowlers as most of the Bangladesh bowlers were playing in the warm-up match against Cricket West Indies President’s XI at Coolidge Cricket Ground. Later, he did some physical exercise.
Shakib is not an avid believer in hard training ahead of the game, rather he focuses on the mental aspects. Before the start of the Sri Lanka series, he was found Covid-19 positive and he just trained for around half an hour before the start of the first Test after testing negative.
Shakib has been made Test captain for the third time and coincidentally every time his journey as captain begins from the Caribbean. He was first made the skipper in 2009 during the second Test against a second-string West Indies side as the leading cricketers went on a strike due to a payment row.
His second tenure as the captain began in 2018 after Mushfiqur Rahim decided not to continue in a leadership role, Shakib led Bangladesh in Test matches for the second time in North Sound in 2018.
