Asia Cup 2021 suspended due to Covid surge in Sri Lanka

The Asia Cup 2021 has been called off due to the worsening Covid-19 crisis across several participating nations including the host Sri Lanka.

The event was scheduled to be held in June in T20 format.

Regarding the cancellation, the chief executive of Sri Lanka Cricket Ashley de Silva said, "Due to the prevailing situation, it will not be possible to play the tournament in June this year."

There has not been an Asia Cup since 2018, with the tournament planned for 2020 having had to be postponed as well, because of Covid-19.

The tournament was supposed to be hosted by Pakistan but it was shifted to Sri Lanka due to political tension between India and Pakistan.

This season of the competition was supposed to be contested between India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, and Malaysia.

Due to the devastation caused by the recent Covid-19 surge, the 14th edition of the Indian Premier League and the sixth season of the Pakistan Super League were suspended indefinitely earlier this year.
