Bangladesh overcame late fight back from Wanindu Hasaranga to beat Sri Lanka by 33 runs in the first one-day international of three-match series in Dhaka on Sunday.

Off-spinner Mehidy Hasan claimed 4-30 while Mustafizur Rahman chipped in with 3-34 as the Tigers bowled out Sri Lanka for 224 in 48.1 after posting 257-6 batting first.

Mushfiqur Rahim, Mahmudullah Riyad and Tamim Iqbal all hit a fifty to guide the home side to a fighting score on a spinning track at Mirpur.

Mushfiq struck 84 runs and shared a century stand with Mahmudullah (54) after opener Tamim laid the foundation with 52 runs.

Sri Lanka looked to be out of the contest once Bangladesh reduced the side to 102-6 before Hasaranga offered the fight back.

Mohammad Saifuddin (2-49) bowled Shanaka for 14 to end his 47-run seventh wicket stand with Hasaranga.

Saifuddin then claimed the wicket of Hasaranga, faced 60 balls and struck three fours and five sixes, to prevent any kind of upset

Mustafiz ended the game as contest by dismissing Udana for 21 in the next ball after Hasaranga gave a catch to Afif Hossain at deep square leg.

With the win, Bangladesh ended 10-match winless streak across all formats.

The match was thrown into uncertainty as fast bowler Udana and bowling coach Chaminda Vaas also tested Covid-19 positive on Saturday alongside Shiran Fernando.

A second test cleared Udana and Vaas of the virus as match began on time.

The virus dilemma gave Bangladesh a psychological edge but they almost wasted it.

The Tigers missed an opportunity to put a bigger total despite three of their experienced campaigners got fifties.

Tamim’s 51st fifty gave them solidity before Dhananjaya de Silva’s two wickets in two balls in 23rd over put them in trouble with 99-4.

Mushfiq and Mahmudullah added 109 to thwart the Sri Lankan bowling with some attacking batting.

Number seven Afif Hossain's 22-ball 27 helped Bangladesh go past the 250-run mark.

The second match will be held at the same ground Tuesday.
