Bangladesh secures maiden silver in Archery World Cup

Archers Mohammad Ruman Shana and Diya Siddique clinched the first silver medal in archery for Bangladesh, the country's best result in a World Cup so far.

As the number 17 seed, the Bangladeshi pair failed to bring the gold home.

The duo lost to the Netherlands' Gabriela Schloesser and Sjef Van Den Berg by 1-5 set points in the recurve mixed event at the second stage of the 2021 Hyundai Archery World Cup in Switzerland's Lausanne Sunday.

Earlier, the Bangladeshi mixed pair confirmed their spot in the final for the first time after defeating Canada's Stephanie Barrett and Brian Maxwell by 5-3 set points in the semifinals Thursday.

Ruman and Diya also beat Iran by 5-3 set points, top-ranked Germany by 5-1 and then Spain by 5-4 on their way to the final.

Earlier, Ruman beat Italy's Mauro Nespoli to win the bronze medal match in the Hyundai World Archery Championships 2019 in the Netherlands' 's-Hertogenbosch and put Bangladesh on the championship podium for the first time

And the World Archery Federation at a function in Lausanne Sunday awarded Bangladesh head coach Martin Frederick as the best coach and Ruman as the best archer for the year 2019, declared by them earlier.
