Bangladesh put 164 on the board depending on Najmul Hossain Shanto’s 89 after they chose to bat in their Asia Cup opener against the co-host of the tournament, Sri Lanka, at the Pallekele International Stadium in Kandy.

Bangladesh stumbled early in their innings when the debutant Tanzid Hasan was gone for none in the second over. Mohammad Naim showed promise but was ousted by Dhananjaya de Silva in the eighth over.

Najmul Hossain Shanto then took over and led from one end as he saw batters on the other end come and go.

Skipper Shakib Al Hasan failed as he was out on five and Bangladesh were down to 36-3.

After Shakib was out, Shanto then partnered with Towhid Hridoy to a 49-run stand. After Towhid was out for 20, no one could make a stand as Mushfiqur Rahim and Mehidy Hasan Miraz were gone quickly scoring 13 and five respectively.

After Shanto’s wicket on 162, Bangladesh were bowled out for 164 as Taskin Ahmed and Mustafizur Rahman were out without scoring a run.

Sri Lanka’s Matheesha Pathirana took four wickets while Maheesh Theekshana bagged two. De Silva, and Dasun Shanaka took a wicket each.
