Bangladesh were bowled out for 217 shortly after lunch, giving South Africa a 236-run lead, on day three of the second Test at St George’s Park in Gqeberha on Sunday.
Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Taijul Islam came out to bat in the second session but they couldn’t last long in the middle as they were dismissed in quick succession by the South African spinners — Keshav Maharaj and Simon Harmer.
Taijul was the first one to go after lunch. The left-arm spinner, who was batting on 5, fell prey to Simon Harmer when he skied a tossed-up delivery, giving away a simple catch to Lizaad Williams at mid-off.
Maharaj picked up his second wicket by sending back Mehidy, who was batting on 11. He drew out a big slog sweep out of Mehidy by tossing it up but the batsman managed more height than distance as he was caught by Duanne Olivier at deep mid-wicket.
Harmer got the final wicket in similar fashion as he enticed Ebadot Hossain by floating it up from around the wicket. Ebadot went for a slog but there wasn’t enough in the shot to clear the boundary as he was held out by Lizaad Williams at deep mid-wicket.
Mushfiqur Rahim top-scored with 51 and his 70-run partnership with Yasir Ali Chowdhury, who scored 46, steadied Bangladesh in the morning session but their work was undone as they got out by playing false shots to deepen the troubles for the Tigers.
