Bangladesh national football team skipper Jamal Bhuyan said after their 1-1 draw against Nepal on Wednesday that they were robbed of a win due to bad referring.

Bangladesh, who had no way but to win to reach the final of the SAFF Championship, were ahead till the 87th minute. But then, as Md Saad Uddin tried to challenge Nepal’s Gautam Shrestha, the Nepalese defender fell over and the referee blew the whistle for a penalty. Anjan Bista scored from the spot and equalized, leaving Bangladesh eliminated.

Replays suggested that there was little to no contact from Saad on Shrestha, but without Video Assistant Referring, the decision stayed put.

Jamal, after the match, took to Twitter to express his disappointment as he called for the use of VAR in the SAFF Championship.

“I have the feeling of that my team got big time robbed today. It is a shame that we don’t use VAR in #SAFFCUP. Everyone except the referee could see it wasn’t a penalty. I’m proud of the team and at the same time I’m very disappointed,” Jamal wrote.

Bangladesh’s draw against Nepal saw them reach five points from four games, which was not enough for Oscar Bruzon’s men to qualify. Nepal on the other hand, have reached the final with seven points from four games.
