A grand launching of SAIF Powertec-DNCC Mayor Cup 2021 cricket tournament was held in the capital on Saturday.

At the ceremony, the jersey and trophy of the tournament, scheduled for November, were unveiled.

Bangladesh opener and one-day international captain Tamim Iqbal was handed over a jersey by Dhaka North City Corporation Mayor Atiqul Islam.

In the event, DNCC Chief Executive Officer Md Selim Reza said the city corporation not only constructs road and works to eradicate mosquitoes, it has also organised the tournament to encourage the youth.

Unique Hotel and Resorts Limited Managing Director Mohammad Noor Ali said Dhaka’s mosquito problem had already been solved and hoped that the mayor would address other civic problems residents of the city face.

He thanked the mayor for his contribution to turning Sheraton Dhaka hotel as the top five-star hotel in the city and one of the best in the global Sheraton hotel chain.

He also thanked Prime Minister's Private Sector Industry and Investment Adviser Salman F Rahman for his contribution in this regard.

Unique Hotel and Resorts Limited owns the Sheraton Dhaka, Westin Dhaka, and Hansa Hotel.

Sheraton Dhaka and Westin Dhaka are the hospitality partners of the cricket tournament.

Speaking on the issue of Dhaka’s traffic jam, Noor Ali said the mayor can take initiative for building four roads beside the Gulshan and Baridhara lakes to reduce traffic congestion. “Businessmen will support him in this initiative.”

At the event, Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner Md Shafiqul Islam said police would extend all sorts of assistance for arranging sport events.

“As many as 80 lakh people are addicted to drugs. The social menace can be kept at bay by engaging them in games,” he added.
