Liton Das will captain Bangladesh in their upcoming three-match One-Day International (ODI) series against India following incumbent skipper Tamim Iqbal’s groin injury.

Liton made his debut in the format against India and will now become the 15th player to lead the Tigers in this format.

Tamim was ruled out of Bangladesh’s ODI series against India on Thursday following scans on his injury.

Confusion regarding who will lead the side was raised following his exclusion as Bangladesh did not have an appointed vice-captain in the 50-over format.

Liton will be leading Bangladesh in an ODI for the first time as he had previously led the side in a T20I against New Zealand in 2021, when he scored a golden duck and Bangladesh lost the match.

Upon Liton’s appointment, the Cricket Operations Chairman of the Bangladesh Cricket Board, Jalal Yunus, believed that the right-handed batter can do a good job as the skipper.

“Liton is one of the more experienced players on the side and has demonstrated leadership qualities. He has a sharp cricketing mind and reads the game well.

“It is most unfortunate to lose Tamim to injury for this very important series, especially because under his captaincy the team has played some outstanding cricket in the last couple of years and he has been our most prolific batsman in this format. He will be missed but we also feel that Liton has the attributes to do a good job as captain,” Jalal added.

Bangladesh will take on India in the first ODI of the series on December 4 at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Dhaka, followed by the second on December 7 at the same venue.

The third ODI will be on December 10 at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chattogram, which is also the venue for the first Test starting on December 14. The second Test of the series will be in Dhaka, starting on December 22.
