Bangladesh concluded the first day of the Sylhet Test against New Zealand with a score of 310 for nine.

The day was called a few overs early due to bad light at the venue.

Having won the toss, the hosts chose to bat first, utilizing the surface effectively in the initial phase of the day but failing to capitalize on a promising start.

In his second Test, Glenn Phillip, bowling for the first time in his Test career, took four wickets, conceding 53 runs in 14 overs.

For Bangladesh, Mahmudul Hasan Joy scored 86 off 166 balls, displaying patience but falling short of building a more substantial total. Opening partner Zakir Hasan also had a promising start but couldn't progress further.

Najmul Hossain Shanto, leading Bangladesh in the absence of Shakib Al Hasan, played flashy shots, including three sixes, but succumbed to a full toss from Phillip, scoring 37 off just 35 balls.

Mominul Haque hinted at playing a significant innings but couldn't surpass 37. Unfortunately, later batters, including Mushfiqur Rahim, failed to meet expectations on a surface that appeared favorable to batsmen.

While most Bangladeshi batters got good starts, surprisingly, none could build substantially on the foundations, except for Joy.

Kyle Jamieson and Ajaz Patel took two wickets each.

The only consolation for Bangladesh on the first day was not losing all wickets. Reflecting on the day, they would admit missing an opportunity to score more runs with fewer wickets lost.
