Sheikh Russel Krira Chakra Limited on Tuesday celebrated the 59th birthday of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's youngest son Shaheed Sheikh Russel.
The Dhaka-based football club organised different programmes to mark the day.
Around 11:00am, floral wreaths were placed at the grave of Russel at the Banani Graveyard on behalf of Sheikh Russel Krira Chakra Chairman Sayem Sobhan Anvir, also the managing director of Bashundhara Group.
A special munajat was offered there seeking eternal peace of the departed soul.
Around 12:30pm, a cake was cut to celebrate the birthday on the club premises in the Bashundhara residential area. Besides, a milad and doa mahfil was also held there.
In the evening, food was distributed among orphans at Sobhanbagh Jame Masjid in the capital.
Sheikh Russel Krira Chakra Director-in-Charge Ismat Jamil Akhond and Director of Finance Md Fakhruddin along with other directors, members and officials were present at the programmes.
Ismat Jamil said, "On this day, we condemn those who brutally killed a nine-year-old child. We celebrated the birthday of Shaheed Sheikh Russel in a befitting manner under the guidance, inspiration and supervision of the honourable Chairman of Sheikh Russel Krira Chakra Limited, Sayem Sobhan Anvir."
Sheikh Russel, also the youngest brother of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, was born on October 18 in 1964 at the historic Bangabandhu Bhaban at Dhanmondi 32 in Dhaka.
He was assassinated along with most of his family members, including his father Bangabandhu, on August 15, 1975, when he was a student of class four at University Laboratory School.
In 2021, the Cabinet Division declared October 18, the birthday of Russel, as Sheikh Russel Day.
