DSEX falls for second straight day

After the record-breaking rally in the past few days, the indices at the Dhaka Stock Exchange witnessed corrections for the second consecutive day, due to profit booking sell-offs across the major sectors.

DSEX, the benchmark index of the DSE, went down by 27.4 points or 0.39 per cent to stand at 6,851 points on Thursday, the last trading session of the week.

The blue-chip index DS30 came down by 6.26 points or 0.25 per cent to settle at 2453.43 at the Dhaka bourse, while the Shariah-based index DSES came down by 6.01 points or 0.40 per cent to close at 1487.20 points.

EBL Securities, in its daily market commentary, said that the central bank’s inspection of the banks’ stock market investments from the special funds adversely impacted the stock sentiment.

Besides, due to profit booking sell-offs across the major sectors, the market started to observe volatility and the bearish momentum took the indices to close in red trajectory, added the brokerage house.

The sectoral performance depicted mixed trends while the large capitalised bank, fuel and power, engineering and pharma and chemicals stocks observed selling pressure on the today.

Besides, the total turnover has declined by 13.35 per cent and stood at Tk 2227.64 crore. Block trades contributed 1.4 per cent of the overall market turnover.

South Bangla Agriculture & Commerce Bank Limited (-3.9 per cent) was the most traded share with a turnover of Tk 73 crore.

On the sectoral front, financial institutions (16.71 per cent), textile (12.56 per cent), and fuel and power (9.44 per cent) issues were in most demand pm on Thursday.

Most of the sectors observed waning performance, out of which travel (-2.1 per cent), paper (-1.6 per cent), and telecom (-1.3 per cent) observed the most corrections.

At the same time, the financial institution (4.8 per cent), jute (3.3 per cent), and services (1.4 per cent) have exerted the most returns on the today.

Out of the 376 issues traded, 105 advanced, 251 declined, and 20 remained unchanged.

Meanwhile, the port city bourse, CSE, also ended in red terrain.

The selected indices (CSCX) and All Share Price Index (CASPI) declined by 73.2 and 123.6 points respectively at the bourse on Thursday.
