Stocks edge lower on profit-taking

Dhaka stocks closed marginally lower on Sunday, the first trading session of the week, as investors went for booking modest profits.

The market was in the positive territory throughout the session but closed in the red in the final minutes.

The benchmark DSEX index declined 13 points or 0.18 per cent to settle at 7,237, hitting as high as 7,277 in the early hours and as low as 7,231 in the final session. The index receded after the rally for the two consecutive sessions.

Two other indices--the Shariah-based DSES index fell 6 points or 0.4 per cent to 1,574 points and the blue-chip comprising DS30 index shed 7 points or 0.29 per cent to 2,665.

The profit-booking took place on textiles, banks, engineering, food and allied, energy, mutual funds, and telecommunications.

The low-cap IT sector flexed its muscle led by Aamranet that was the top gainer hitting the almost upper limit circuit breaker at 9.92 percent without any fundamental reason.

However, the bourse saw strong trading activities, leading to a sharp increase in the turnover that surged more than 21 per cent to Tk 2,257 crore over the previous session.

Losers outpaced gainers as out of the issues traded, 113 advanced, 223 declined, and 33 remained unchanged.

CVO Petrochemical Refinery was the worst loser, ending its winning streak for nearly a week after the news that it signed an agreement with Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation (BPC) on selling Naphtha for the next five years.

Other top losers included ICB AMCL 2nd Mutual Fund, Tamijuddin Textile Mills Limited, Rupali Life Insurance, Desh Garments, Pragati Life Insurance, Agricultural Marketing Company Ltd (Pran), Meghna Condensed Milk Industries and Kaye & Que.

Orion Infusion was the most traded stock with shares worth Tk 1,42 crore, ousting the heavyweight Beximco Ltd. Other turnover leaders included LafargeHolcim Bangladesh, Shahjibazar Power Co, Delta Life Insurance, Beximco Pharmaceuticals, Genex Infosys and Maksons Spinning.
