Bangladesh’s second-largest mobile phone operator Robi reported a 122 per cent rise in net profit to Tk 86.5 crore in the third quarter of this year.

“We are very happy to see our profit rising steadily every quarter this year,” said Robi Acting CEO and CFO M Riyaaz Rashid in a virtual news briefing on Sunday.

However, it is very disappointing to note that our net profit in the first nine months could have been Tk 289.3 crore, had we not been subjected to a further 2 per cent minimum turnover tax, he said.

Out of a total subscriber base of 5.30 crore, 2.24 crore are 4G subscribers. Besides, 74 per cent of the company’s subscribers are now data users, which are the highest in the industry, it said.

Robi’s 4G subscriber base grew 51.1 per cent in the third quarter of 2021 compared to the same period a year ago.

Its subscriber base grew 2.3 per cent during the period. Robi’s subscriber market share stood at 29.5 per cent at the end of the third quarter ended in September.

On the digital front, Riyaaz was very upbeat about having the highest percentage of data users (74 per cent) in the industry. He also cited that 42 per cent of Robi’s smartphone and data users are actively using the company’s self-care app for availing the desired services.

Its revenue grew 7.8 per cent to Tk 2,085 crore during the period.

The company’s investment stood at Tk 650.7 crore in the quarter, including capital expenditure.

Robi paid Tk 1,119 crore to the government exchequer in the third quarter.

In the first nine months (January-September) of this year, the company had logged a net profit of Tk 167.4 crore, an increase of more than 44 per cent from the same period a year earlier, Robi said.
