Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission (BSEC) Chairman Professor Shibli Rubayat-Ul-Islam has urged British investors and NRBs to invest in Bangladesh stock markets that offer the highest returns.

He made the call on Thursday in the inaugural event of the Bangladesh Investment Summit organised by the securities regulator in the United Kingdom.

“Bangladesh economy is recovering faster from the Covid-19 pandemic and consistently posting robust economic GDP growth,” he said while luring the foreign investors.

Before the BSEC chairman’s speech, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated the summit.

“With the rising income of growing middle class, Bangladesh is one of fastest-growing economies in South Asia. Multi-national companies are also expanding their business here,” said the BSEC chairman.

The government megaprojects like Padma Bridge, which is expected to add about 1 per cent to the country’s GDP, will be the growth drivers of the economy, he said.

“As the economy has been growing faster, Bangladesh needs huge investment from home and abroad. And the stock market can be a big source of funds. This will make the stock markets more vibrant and dynamic,” he said.

“So it is high time to invest in Bangladesh stock market taking advantage of highest returns it is offering now,” said the BSEC chief.

He said Bangladesh offers hidden gems and opportunities in the bond market for global investors. “There are opportunities in investing in green bonds as well as Islamic bonds like Sukuk,” he said.

On top of that, Bangladesh’s economy remains stable even amid the pandemic, which gives a clear indication of further growth of the country’s stock markets, he said.

The BSEC has been organizing the two-day investment summit—one is in London and another in Manchester.

The inaugural function was attended by Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen, Private Sector Industry and Investment Adviser to Prime Minister Salman Fazlur Rahman, State Minister for Information and Communication Technology Zunaid Ahmed Palak, Executive Chairman of Bangladesh Investment Development Authority (BIDA) Md Sirazul Islam, Bangladesh Export Processing Area Authority (BEPZA) Executive Chairman Major General Md Nazrul Islam and Bangladesh High Commissioner to the United Kingdom Saida Muna Tasnim.
