Stocks end flat amid volatility; textiles shine, NBFI down

Dhaka stocks closed flat amid volatility and lacklustre trade on Wednesday.

The benchmark DSEX index witnessed a flat opening and oscillated in a ban thereafter. Finally, it settled at 7,081, hitting a high of 7,098 and a low of 7,064.

Its junior partners the Shariah-based DSES index edged 1.51 points or 0.10 per cent higher to 1,512 while the blue-chip DS30 index dropped 5 points or 0.20 per cent to 2,604.

Textile index flexed muscle soaring 1.8 per cent led by Tamijuddin Textile Mills hitting the upper limit circuit almost at 10 per cent, making it the top gainer.

Out of 58 listed textile issues, prices of 52 companies advanced, five dropped, six remained unchanged.

Among other, large-cap sectors, engineering also booked the largest gain of 0.45 per cent followed by fuel and power 0.17 per cent, telecommunication 0.14 per cent, and bank 0.12 per cent.

On the flip side, NBFI suffered most 0.49 per cent, followed by pharmaceutical 0.18 per cent, food and allied 0.08 per cent.

Bangladesh Export Import Company or Beximco was the most traded share with a turnover of Tk 66 crore. Other top turnover leaders included Bangladesh Shipping Corporation, Fortune Shoes, Orion Pharma, Bay Leasing, Saif Powertec, and British American Tobacco Bangladesh Company.

“Indices stayed afloat in green terrain as investors' profit-booking in mid-session pushed the core index to settle flat after the stocks opened higher at the beginning of the session,” said the EBL Securities in a note.

“Trading activities were a bit sluggish as most investors were seeking opportunities in potential stocks ahead of the December-end declaration session,” it said.

Moreover, as per the latest data of BBS, Bangladesh's economy pulled off a blistering GDP growth of 6.94 per cent in the last fiscal year which is expected to boost investors’ confidence on the trading floor ahead, it added.

Besides, investors' participation declined as the total turnover decreased 20.6 per cent over the previous session to Tk 1,150 crore.

Out of the 385 issues traded, 205 advanced, 128 declined, and 52 remained unchanged.

The port city bourse, CSE, also stayed afloat in green terrain. The selected indices (CSCX) and All Share Price Index (CASPI) have inched up by 1.1 points and 5.9 points respectively.
