Amid the global turmoil triggered by the Russian invasion on Ukraine, Dhaka stocks witnessed bearish trading sessions throughout the past week.
The panic-driven selling spree dragged the benchmark DSEX index of Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) down by 151.92 points or 2.2 per cent to 6,839 in past week. The index was at 6,991 at the end of the previous week.
The junior indices of the bourse also ended the week in red as the blue-chip comprising DS30 index shed 58.87 points or 2.29 per cent to 2,514 and the Shariah DSES index fell by 32 points or 2.15 per cent to 1,475.
The average turnover followed the indices and went down 16.46 per cent to Tk 996 crore in the week. The figure was Tk 1,193 crore in the previous week.
Out of 392 issues traded in the week, 73 advanced, 297 declined and 17 remained unchanged.
The carnage at the DSE was particularly in line with the meltdown in global markets where equities saw heavy bleeding on Russia’s invasion on Ukraine, analysts say.
The week started with investors carrying pessimistic sentiments due to ongoing market volatility and negative connotation of recent BB’s circular regarding NBFI’s capital market exposure.
Adding to the peril, in the last trading session, Russia-Ukraine crisis caused investors to panic as they feared oil price spike and rising inflation, said EBL Securities in its weekly market review.
Investors were mostly active in miscellaneous (13.2 per cent), pharmaceuticals and chemicals (12.6 per cent) and tannery (11.7 per cent) sectors.
All sectors witnessed negative performances out of which general insurance (-4.6 per cent), tannery (-4.5 per cent) and financial institution (-4.4 per cent) witnessed the most corrections this week.
DSSL gained the most at the Dhaka bourse as its share price advanced 22.8 per cent in the week. The following places in the gainers’ list were taken by Crown Cement, Apex Spinning, ADN Telecom, PDL, and Zahin Textiles.
On the other hand, Genex Infosys was the week’s top loser with its share price declining 13.4 per cent during the period. The other loser companies are YPL, Queen South Textile and STYLECRAFT.
Fortune Shoes topped the turnover chart with a weekly turnover of Tk 108 crore. It was followed by Beximco, Orion Pharma, Bangladesh Shipping, and Rahima Food.
DSSL turned out to be the week’s top index puller, followed by RENATA, ADN Telecom, Alif, Delta Spinning and others.
Square Pharma was the week’s top index dragger, followed by LafargeHolcim Cement, Grameenphone, Beximco Pharma and others.
