DSE turnover dips to ten-month low

Dhaka stocks closed marginally down on Thursday with the turnover falling to a 10-month low as investors showed concern over the escalation of the Russia-Ukraine crisis, dealers said.

The benchmark DSEX index edged over 3 points or 0.99 per cent lower to settle at 6,696, hitting as low as 6,647 and as high as 6,712 during the trade.

Its two junior indices--the Shariah-based DSES index fell slightly 1 point or 0.09 per cent to 1,441 and the blue-chip comprising DS30 index declined 7 points or 0.30 per cent to 2,462.

The turnover stood at Tk 6,44 crore—its lowest since April 18, 2021, when it was Tk 602 crore and 18 per cent down from the previous session.

The ongoing crisis over Russia and Ukraine kept investors on the sidelines,” said a top dealer.

“Equity indices of the Dhaka bourse observed intense volatility while the DSEX has failed to withhold positive momentum as investors’ confidence on the trading floor is yet to recover as they feared for a longer Ukraine-Russian conflict emergence,” said the EBL Securities in a note.

Trading activities were sluggish while turnover logged lowermost in the past 10 months as most investors are on the sidelines amidst the ongoing bearish vibe to avoid any potential correction, it said.

On the sectoral front, miscellaneous (13.8per cent) issues exerted the highest turnover followed by textile (11.0per cent) and paper (10.9per cent) stocks. The majority of the sectors displayed dismal performance, out of which ceramic (-1.0 per cent), Jute (-1.0 per cent), and paper (-0.8 per cent) observed the most corrections while only telecom (1.2 per cent), financial institution (-1.0 per cent) and travel (-0.7 per cent) have exerted positive returns on the bourse. Out of the 384 issues traded, 165 advanced, 139 declined, and 80 remained unchanged.
