Stocks end flat for third straight day

The Dhaka stocks ended flat after day-long volatility on Wednesday as investors showed little interest in parking fresh money in stocks and opted for a wait-and-see approach.

The benchmark DSEX index ended flat with a slight rise of 0.11 points, to settle at 6,765 on the day. The Shariah-based DSES index lost 2.34 points or 0.16 per cent to stand at 1454 and the blue-chip comprising DS30 index declined 0.48 points or 0.01 per cent to 2458 points.

Investors’ participation at the bourse decreased to a good extent as turnover decreased Tk 230 crore to stand at Tk 835 crore from Tk 1,065 crore recorded on the previous day.

The lack of enthusiasm from investors came as the bourses will remain closed on Thursday marking the birth anniversary of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

Out of the issues traded on the day, 119 advanced, 228 declined, and 33 remained unchanged.

“The capital bourse observed a see-saw trading on the day. The market began on a positive note but was unable to maintain its upward momentum as most investors remained on the sidelines owing to the temporary circuit breaker, which caused many stocks to remain dearer at the current price level for the investors,” said EBL Securities.

On the sectoral front, IT (14.6 per cent) issues exerted the highest turnover followed by textile (13.8 per cent) and miscellaneous (10.8 per cent) stocks.

Most of the sectors showed dismal performance, out of which telecom (-2.2 per cent), financial institution (-1.3 per cent) and paper (-1.3 per cent) exerted the most positive returns while bank (0.8 per cent), pharma (0.3 per cent), and food (0.3 per cent) observed the most positive returns.

The port city bourse, CSE, also settled in red terrain. The selected indices (CSCX) and All Share Price Index (CASPI) have declined by 3.1 points and 4.0 points respectively.

Gemini Sea Food was the day’s top gainer at the Dhaka bourse, with a 8.53 per cent rise in share price.

On the flip side, Robi turned out to be the day’s top loser.
