Stocks end flat after extreme volatility

Stocks endured a volatile session with the benchmark DSEX index swinging both ways before ending flat on Tuesday, while volumes and value declined from the previous day.

During the session, the index rose 10 points or 0.15 per cent to close at 6,677 after jumping to an intra-day high of 6,687 and falling to an intra-day low of 6,652.

Its junior indices—the Shariah-based DSES index was marginally up 1 point or 0.12 per cent at 1,456 while the blue-chip DS30 index shed 2 points or 0.09 per cent at 2,474.

“Investors preferred to stay on the sidelines ahead of Eid,” said an analyst at an investment bank.

Turnover stood at Tk 766 crore, up almost 30 per cent over the previous session’s Tk 593 crore, backed by miscellaneous (17.2 per cent), pharmaceuticals & chemical (14.8 per cent) and engineering (7.7 per cent) stocks.

Gainers took a marginal lead over the losers as out of 381 issues traded, 166 closed up, 157 closed down and 58 remained unchanged.

The sectors pulling up the index were engineering, energy, textile, pharmaceutical and ceramic.

The sectors pulling down the index were banks, financial institutions, and telecommunications.

“Indices on the Dhaka bourse buoyed on regulatory stances while the bourse observed bargain-hunting on selective issues after active participation of both institutional and retail investors helped the market to come out of prolonged bearishness,” said EBL Securities in a note.

“Participation has observed a considerable rise as the bottom circuit breaker raised to 5 per cent, giving investors a breather to engage in fresh investment activities,” it said.

The port city bourse, CSE, settled in red terrain. The selected indices (CSCX) and All Share Price Index (CASPI) have declined by 13.2 points and 20.3 points respectively.

Among scrips, Beximco topped the volumes with shares worth Tk 52 crore, followed by JMI Hospital Requisite Manufacturing, Bangladesh Shipping Corporation, Orion Pharmaceuticals and Sonali Paper.
