DSE turnover hits two-month low

Dhaka stock exchange (DSE) turnover fell below Tk 600 crore on Thursday for the first time in about two months as investors grew hesitant to commit money amid tensions over a number of problems with the nation’s economic indicators.

Equity indices of DSE, the prime bourse of the country finished flat since major macroeconomic headwinds led to sluggish trading consequently market ended in a flat position, said EBL securities.

As a result, bourses observed a decline in participation, while turnover decreased by 17.3 per cent and stood at Tk 580 crore as against Tk 700 crore in the previous session. It was also the lowest single-day transaction in seven weeks since May 26 when turnover was recorded at Tk 539 crore.

Meanwhile, DSEX, inched down by 0.3 points and settled at 6,324 points against 6,324 points at the end of the Thursday. The DSES Index also shed 0.36 points to finish at 1,377 point. However, the DS30 Index saw a fractional gain of 0.88 points to close at 2,273 point.

The market tumbled in the beginning but late hour buying across the bourse helped the DSEX to end in a flat position. Investors were cautious due to the prolonged pessimism on the bourse, as their concerns spiraled by the news that foreign currency reserves had dropped to a two-year low of under $40 billion, EBL said.

As a result, bourses observed a decline in participation, while turnover decreased by 17.3% and stood at BDT 5.8billion as against Tk 7.0billion in the previous session. On the sectoral front, Fuel & Power (14.8 per cent) issues exerted the highest turnover followed by Textile (14.7 per cent) and Engineering (13 per cent) stocks.

Most of the sectors displayed dismal returns, out of which General Insurance (-0.8 per cent), Miscellaneous (-0.7 per cent), and IT (-0.7 per cent) exerted the most negative returns while Jute (1.8 per cent), Fuel & Power (1.0 per cent), and Services (0.6 per cent) generated some positive returns on the bourse.

Out of the 386 issues traded, 130 advanced, 197 declined, and 59 remained unchanged.

Titas Gas was the most-traded stock with shares worth Tk 47 crore changing hands, closely followed by Beximco, KDS Accessories, IPDC Finance and JMI Hospital Requisite Manufacturing.

BD Autocars was the top gainer, posting an 8.53 per cent gain while NRB Commercial Bank was the day’s worst loser, losing 35.36 per cent following its price adjustment after the record date.
