4 drug companies post double-digit earnings

Twenty-six of the thirty-three companies, listed under the Pharmaceuticals & Chemicals sector, have released their financial reports for the first six months [July-December period] of FY24. Seven are yet to do so till the filing of this report.

In this timeframe, four companies – Square Pharmaceuticals PLC, Renata Ltd, Pharma Aids, and IBN SINA Pharmaceutical Industry PLC – posted double-digit earnings per share.

Square Pharmaceuticals PLC posted earnings per share of Tk 12.69 in the first six months of FY24 during the July-December period, compared to Tk 11.99 recorded year-on-year.

Besides, it is the only company to have exceeded the Tk 1,000 crore mark, posting a net profit of Tk 1,124 crore in the first six months of FY24.

Khandaker Habibuzzaman, company secretary of Square Pharmaceuticals PLC, said, “The company revenue has gone up by about 15 per cent compared to the same period previous year.

“Meanwhile, Square Pharmaceuticals Kenya EPZ Ltd income has also been added since it had no income last year. Square Pharmaceuticals Kenya EPZ Ltd added Tk 6.23 crore from the project. Besides, Square LifeSciences Ltd income is hundred times higher year-on-year.”

According to the company’s latest financial report, Square LifeSciences Ltd posted revenue of Tk 552 crore in the first six months of FY24, compared to Tk 2.11 crore recorded in the same period last year.

Another company with double-digit earnings per share in FY24 is Renata Ltd. The company earned Tk 16.57 per share during the period, compared to Tk 18.28 in the previous year.

Renata Ltd net profit for the period was Tk 190 crore, compared to Tk 209 crore recorded in the same period last year.

According to the company’s financial report, total revenue earned in the first six months of FY24 was Tk 1,860 crore, compared to Tk 1,594 crore posted in the same period previous year.

The IBN SINA Pharmaceutical Industry PLC reported a 13 per cent higher profit in the first six months of FY24 compared to the same period last year. This company posted net profit of Tk 37 crore in the first six months of FY24, compared to a profit of Tk 32 crore posted year-on-year.

The company’s earnings per share during the period were Tk 11.92, compared to Tk 10.53 recorded in the same period last year.

Pharma Aids, another listed Pharmaceuticals & Chemicals company, posted earnings per share of Tk 10.90 in the first six months of FY24, compared to Tk 1.23 posted in the same period last year.

During this time, the company made a net profit of Tk 3 crore, compared to a profit of Tk 38 lakh in the same period last year.

Regarding such unusual earnings per share, Pharma Aids Company Secretary Md Humayun Kabir said, “EPS significantly increased compared to the previous year’s first six months because of an increase in the sales price and volume of glass ampoules.

“This positive trend may however be adversely affected in the following quarters due to the extreme volatility of the USD exchange rate, which is going up day by day.”

Indo-Bangla Pharmaceuticals Ltd, Silva Pharmaceuticals Ltd, Central Pharmaceuticals Ltd, Global Heavy Chemicals Ltd, and ACI Ltd posted losses in the first six months of FY24.
