AKM Habibur Rahman has been elected as the new chairman of the Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE).
He was unanimously elected on Wednesday for the next three years during a board meeting attended by independent directors and shareholder directors.
The CSE Board of Directors appointed him as the chairman in line with the Exchange Demutualization Act of 2013.
He began his career in 1991 when he joined the Bangladesh Telegraph and Telephone Board as a BCS (Engineering: Telecommunications) officer and worked in various positions at the board until 2008.
After the resignations of all of the independent directors back in August following the ouster of the Awami League government, the Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission (BSEC) approved a list of seven independent directors.
As per the BSEC approval, Alamgir Morshed, Prof Dr Md Saiful Islam, AKM Habibur Rahman, Dr Mahmud Hassan, M Zulfiquar Hussain, Naznin Sultana and Farida Yasmin were approved as independent directors of CSE.
Among them, Alamgir refused to accept the appointment as independent director.
Habibur has successfully managed various administrative responsibilities throughout his career as a senior civil service officer, particularly in the telecommunications sector.
