IOSCO holds first-ever conference in Dhaka

The Asia-Pacific Regional Committee (APRC) of the International Organization of Securities Commissions (IOSCO) concluded its first-ever two-day conference in Dhaka on Thursday.

The closing ceremony, held at the Bangabandhu International Conference Center, was organised by the Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission (BSEC).

At the event, Prof Shibli Rubayat-Ul-Islam, chairman of BSEC and vice-chair of IOSCO APRC, spoke about the promising capital market in Bangladesh.

He underscored the need for technology to increase market development and investment capacity, and mentioned that the commission is working towards exploiting this possibility.

The Chair of APRC and Vice-Commissioner for International Affairs of the Japan Financial Services Agency, Shigeru Ariizumi, was the guest of honour at the programme.

IOSCO Deputy Secretary General Tajinder Singh spoke about the organisation's diversity, mentioning that about 95 per cent of the world's capital market is included in IOSCO.

He put emphasis on the organisation’s works in the public interest, with investor protection, market purity and economic stability as its priorities.

Mashiur Rahman, economic affairs adviser to the prime minister of Bangladesh and the chief guest of the programme, said the participation of Bangladesh in the policymaking of the global stock market will increase through this arrangement of BSEC.

He hoped that necessary steps can be taken to develop the country's stock market in coordination with relevant laws.

Financial Institutions Division Secretary Sheikh Mohammad Salim Ullah, who was the special guest at the event, said the opportunity to host the IOSCO Asia-Pacific Regional Committee (APRC) conference is a great honour for Bangladesh.

He expressed hope that the BSEC will organise more international conferences in the future.

Officials of the capital market regulatory agencies from other countries in the Asia-Pacific region, including Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Hong Kong, Japan, India, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, Pakistan, and Nepal, attended the conference.

The BSEC hoped that through the two-day conference, Bangladesh and its capital market would be better known in the international arena. It also hoped that the conference would increase the interest and confidence of foreign investors.
