Fifteen eminent people – renowned in the stock market arena – have been elected in the 12th national polls. Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) Chairman Prof Dr Hafiz Muhammad Hasan Babu, on behalf of the board of directors, congratulated them on Wednesday.

According to a message from the DSE chairman, among the elected members of the parliament are DSE shareholders, track holders, and people well-known for their involvement in the capital market.

Alongside them, advisors, ministers, eminent industrialists, and brand ambassadors of capital market-related education programmes are also in this list.

Chairman Hasan Babu said, “In the last 15 years, many development projects have been implemented in the country in terms of infrastructure. Entrepreneurs from all over the country have already undertaken various projects around these infrastructures.

“The country's capital market can be one of the means of financing necessary for the implementation of these projects.”

He added, “Smart economy is one of the main pillars of Prime Minister's Smart Bangladesh, and a smart economy needs a smart capital market. I call upon the elected representatives to provide necessary guidance in transforming the capital market into a smart capital market.”

Earlier, the speaker herself administered her own oath. She congratulated the newly elected MPs.

According to the Election Commission Gazette, Awami League led by Sheikh Hasina won 222 out of 298 seats, more than enough for her party to form a straight fourth five-year term government since January 2009, after earlier winning power for the first time in 1996-2001.

A total of 16 political parties including the BNP boycotted the polls.

The 62 independent candidates who won from their constituencies take the oath at 11am and 11 Jatiya party candidates at 12pm on the day.
