BSEC appoints Tariquzzaman as DSE managing director

The securities regulator Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission (BSEC) on Tuesday appointed Dr ATM Tariquzzaman as the managing director of the premier bourse Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) for three years.

A commission meeting presided over by BSEC Chairman Professor Shibli Rubayat-Ul-Islam approved the appointment of Tariquzzaman as the DSE managing director.

On Monday, the DSE board finalised three candidates from 23 aspirants and later sent the list to the BSEC for the appointment of its managing director from the short-listed candidates.

Earlier, the bourse’s nomination and remuneration committee (NRC) shortlisted six candidates from 23 for the position of managing director, and issued a letter to them for an interview held on July 27.

The bourse’s top executive position fell vacant in September last year following the resignation of the former managing director Tarique Amin Bhuiyan.

Tariquzzaman was a lecturer at the Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand. Later, he joined the BSEC in 1997 as deputy director, and later became its executive director in 2007.

He obtained a MCom (Accounting) from the University of Dhaka, an MBA (Financial Management) from the South Eastern University, a MCom (Financial Planning), and a MPA (Master of Professional Accounting) from Deakin University, Melbourne, Australia.

He received an AusAid Scholarship for his studies in Australia. He then completed his PhD in Accounting and Finance from the Victoria University of Wellington,New Zealand.

On July 25, last year, Tarique Amin Bhuiyan joined the DSE as its managing director. In its 1,008th meeting on July 4, 2021, the DSE board had decided to appoint him as the managing director.

Previously, former DSE managing director Kazi Sanaul Huque had resigned on October 8, 2020, from the post citing personal reasons. On February 8, 2020, he had been appointed for three years.
