23 lakh taxpayers submit returns

As many as 22,99,625 taxpayers filed their income tax returns till January 2, according to the National Board of Revenue, while the extended deadline for submitting returns ended on the day.

The NBR data showed around Tk 3,281 crore has been collected from the returns.

A total of 1,05,521 taxpayer’s identification number (TIN) holders registered through the e-filing system while 61,203 of them submitted their returns online.

On November 30, while marking the Income Tax Day, the revenue board extended the deadline to file income tax returns for FY2020-21 by one month from November 30 to December 31.

As December 31 was Friday and January 1, 2022 was Saturday, the NBR allowed taxpayers to submit their returns till January 2.

Currently, there are more than 68 lakh taxpayers in the country, the NBR data said.

The Income Tax Act makes it mandatory for all TIN holders to file their tax returns by its deadline with certain exceptions.

The NBR will allow taxpayers to submit returns without late submission fees after one month of the deadline if they have a valid reason for the delay.
