The Chattogram Customs House has seized a container of milk powder imported from Dubai. Padma Safety Products in Dhaka’s Nawabpur area had imported the item under the declaration of electric motor.
Due to the inconsistency in import, the Audit, Investigation and Research (AIR) wing of the Custom House kept the matter under surveillance and checked the container at the port’s NCT Yard on Tuesday.
The AIR team found 13,530kg milk powder of NIDO brand inside the container, Chattogram Customs Deputy Commissioner Md Saiful Haque told The Business Post.
Although the consignment came from the Dubai port to Chattogram port on March 13, the importer was yet to submit a bill of entry in the processing system.
As the duty rate of the declared electric motor is only 26.20 per cent while that of milk powder is 89.32 per cent, there was a scope of losing revenue of around Tk 55 lakh, he added.
Chattogram Customs Commissioner Mohammad Fyzur Rahman instructed the officials concerned to take legal action in this regard.
